Lunar New Year 2025 in Liverpool

Gung Hey Fat Choy! 恭喜發財

Celebrate Lunar New Year in Liverpool!

Welcome the Year of the Snake with vibrant festivities at Liverpool ONE and across the city.

Main celebrations take place on Sunday 2 February in Europe’s oldest Chinatown featuring:

🐍 Traditional dragon, lion, and unicorn parades

🐍 Firecracker displays, Tai Chi, street theatre, and stage performances

🐍 Family workshops, a fairground, food and craft stalls

🐍 A fiery finale from performers Bring the Fire

Taking place from 11am to 5pm, the special event will also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the iconic Chinese Arch gifted to the city in 2000.

On Saturday 25 January, a city-centre parade led by Pagoda Arts, Movema, and the Liverpool Hung Gar Kung Fu Friendship Association will fill the streets with colourful costumes and stilt walkers, starting at midday on Church Street.

On Saturday 1 February, enjoy quieter family-friendly activities and crafts in Chinatown, free from loud music and firecrackers.

In the lead-up to the event, thousands of red lanterns will adorn the streets, and iconic buildings like St George’s Hall will glow red.

Projections inspired by Chinese mythology will also light up St Luke’s (Bombed Out Church) on Saturday 1 and  Sunday 2 February from 5:30-9pm, accompanied by art installations and family activities.

What’s happening at Liverpool ONE?

A striking willow snake sculpture will be placed in the water feature near the Liverpool sign, created by artist Sarah Gallagher from Twigtwisters, and the Liverpool sign will also be decorated to mark the occasion.

Along with China Town and Royal Albert Dock Liverpool, red lanterns will be displayed on Paradise Street and College Lane from Monday 20 January, and Liverpool ONE will also welcome the exciting parade on Saturday 25 January. Incorporating a street theatre piece with colourful Beijing opera-style costumes and stilt walkers, the parade will start at midday on Church Street, leading on to Paradise Street in Liverpool ONE before heading to the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool.
