Phil was nominated as a Community Hero by Bernadette, who said…

“Phil is a volunteer counsellor at WEB Merseyside; he volunteers his time weekly with some of the most vulnerable adults, welcoming them and putting them at ease. During lockdown, Phil would still support clients over the phone, and did extra hours doing welfare calls to isolated people.

He is very warm, kind and caring and is able to engage with the most vulnerable and frightened clients. He has completed his 100hr placement with us; but still chooses to volunteer and give back.”

Phil, how did you get into volunteering?

I firstly got into volunteering to gain my counselling qualification. I surpassed the hours and decided to continue.

What inspires you to help others?

The inspiration to help others varies. I find I am drawn spiritually and emotionally to continue. I feel so honoured and privileged when clients share their stories and emotions. Realising that I can make a positive change within society, to help people change their situation.

What can people do to ‘light up Christmas’, and bring a smile to someone’s face this year?

Whilst we all want to bring a smile to someone’s face and light up Christmas, I would like people to remember that the first person’s face  they should bring a smile to is their own. To have love and compassion for yourself, to stop being so judgemental to yourself. Allow yourself to be who you are, what YOU want. If you look after yourself, allow yourself to be you, this will show to others and will in turn make them smile too.

Thank you, Phil!
