Perfect Christmas trips for adults and kids

Monday 11 November 2019

Here in Liverpool, it’s safe to say we go pretty big at Christmas. The city is bursting with festive sparkle from November to January, boasting markets, an ice festival, pantos, shopping specials and an absolutely massive Christmas tree (it’s right here at Liverpool ONE - just look up).

Whatever your annual traditions and whoever you love to spend your December with, our celebration-mad city really does offer something for everyone.

To help you plan the perfect Christmas day out, we’ve unwrapped a fabulous selection of festive treats for all ages. We’ve got family fun, plus grown-up indulgence after dark.

It all starts with the official ONE Big Christmas Street Party on 15 November – we’ll meet you at the Christmas tree from 4-8pm for reindeer, live music, Bar Hütte and a street party like no other.

Children’s Christmas activities in Liverpool

Buckle up, kids. There’s a LOT of family-friendly things to do in Liverpool this Christmas, so you’ll have a busy few weeks.

Pantos and Christmas shows

  • ELF at M&S Bank Arena

It’s a must-watch every Christmas, and now you can see the story live at M&S Bank Arena: ELF has been supersized into a huge Christmas spectacular, as the Broadway musical flies straight over to Liverpool.

  • Peter Pan at the Liverpool Empire Theatre – 7 to 29 December

Head to the magnificent Empire Theatre in December for a classic pantomime in Liverpool, a swashbuckling adventure suitable for all the family.

  • Sleeping Beauty at the Everyman Theatre – 23 November to 18 January

This year’s rock ‘n’ roll panto at the Everyman is Sleeping Beauty, complete with guitars, wild costumes and plenty of chances to sing along.

  • Beasty Baby at the Unity Theatre – 10 to 28 December

If panto isn’t your thing, check out Beasty Baby at Unity Theatre. This magical Christmas show uses a mix of live music and puppetry to tell the story of Beasty Baby and the adventures of three people who raise this mischievous child.

Christmas movies at ODEON

If it’s chilly outside, head to the warmth of the ODEON at Liverpool ONE to catch a Christmas flick. The big release for kids and families this Autumn/Winter is the much-anticipated Frozen 2 (released 22 November) but keep your eyes peeled for the ODEON Kids listings for other feel-good family favourites and Christmas classics.

Immersive play at the LEGO Store

This Christmas, take the kids to the LEGO Store at Liverpool ONE, where they can join in interactive play events and building challenges. To find out what’s going on in December, sign up to be a Lego VIP member and you’ll receive invites to exclusive Christmas events and promotions.

Warm-up at Hotel Chocolat

Head to Hotel Chocolat where you can pick up some indulgent gifts and enjoy delicious treats in the chocolate cafe right inside the store. There’s a fantastic choice of hot chocolates, Coffee Chocolat Lattes and plenty of warming, spiced seasonal specials. And it may be freezing outside, but we bet the kids will still jump at the chance to enjoy Hotel Chocolat’s famous Ice Cream of the Gods.

Liverpool Christmas Ice Festival

It’s back! The iconic Christmas Ice Festival returns to Pier Head from 13 November to 5 January with its biggest ever ice slide, plus covered outdoor rink, funfair rides and pop-up food and drink stalls. There’s plenty for all ages, with penguin skate aids for tiny skaters through to the high-speed ice run for thrill-seeking teens. If you don’t fancy taking to the ice, you can always sip a lovely mulled wine or two from the sidelines.

Polar Adventure at Chavasse Park

A land train adventure is setting off from Chavasse Park this Christmas, as part of a brand new experience at Liverpool ONE. Perfect for children, the train departs from a special station at Chavasse Park and includes several stops for face painting, crafts, hot chocolate and storytime inside festive yurts.

It’s led by the Jolly Station Master, who’ll be your guide through light installations, live performances and more – all taking place between 15 November and Christmas Eve.

After dark – Christmas in Liverpool for adults

Now it’s time for a more grown-up look at the festive fun and games available in the city this year. Whether you have a Christmas party to plan or are ready to party with friends and family, we’ve got plenty of fun ways to spend the season right here in Liverpool.

Liverpool Christmas Market

In the forecourt of the magnificent St George’s Hall is the much-loved Christmas Market. More than 40 charming, twinkly wooden chalets will be selling handmade gifts, crafts, food, drink and more from St George’s Plateau from 15 November to 23 December.

Christmas Markets at Liverpool ONE

Always one of the best Christmas activities in Liverpool, the market is a great place to indulge in some Christmas shopping with friends and family. And you can have a cheeky tipple while you browse. Choose from the cosy Ski Lodge, Teepee Bar and the Windmill Bar and Gin Tin, and make sure you sample the food – the Bavarian Grill and Yorkshire Pudding Wrap stall are particular highlights.

Mulled and Spiced Christmas Cocktails

If the temperature’s dropping, it can only mean one thing – it’s time to warm those cockles with a mulled wine or two.

Bars across the city are also launching some spectacular festive cocktail specials, including The Club House at Liverpool ONE with its brand new Seasonal Showstoppers menu. It features a Nutella Espresso Martini, Chocolate Orange Aperol Spritz, Black Forest Mojito and even a Butter Beer! House warmers include a Pumpkin Spice Latte, Unicorn Hot Chocolate and a lovely Winter Punch. You may have to visit more than once to give this menu a thorough testing.

Karaoke, drinks and apres-ski at Bar Hütte

Bar Hütte under the Liverpool ONE Christmas tree is THE place for festive atmosphere, with free-flowing drinks, a cosy Alpine atmosphere and ski lodge party vibes. And there’s karaoke too. Book a Hütte for 6-10 of your pals and belt out the Christmas hits from Mariah, Wham! and all your favourites..
