Long school summer holidays were originally created so youngsters could help their parents with the harvest.

Times have certainly changed. But thankfully the weeks of holiday remain. Head to Liverpool city centre this summer where there are a whole host of events and activities to keep the everyone entertained all summer long.

For the adventurous

Down at the waterfront for example, the Adventure Dock Company is challenging families (anyone aged eight and up) to take to a giant inflatable aqua park obstacle course. And if your youngsters have been inspired by England’s World Cup success, from 1-20 August there’s also Summer Football at the newly-monikered Royal Albert Dock.

Take in a show, or a view

The neighbouring Echo Arena has two family-friendly shows visiting – Walking With Dinosaurs from 31 July-1 August and Cirque du Soleil’s Ovo from 16-19 August. Be sure to couple a good show up with a great deal! Don’t miss kids eat free menus available in Yard & Coop and Jamie’s Italian. Discover more great offers!

While teenagers might not be that interested in the Beatles, the British Music Experience at the Cunard Building offers hands-on exhibits from every decade of British music from 1945 to the present day, which could be the perfect solution for several generations looking for a day out together.

If that hasn’t worn them out, head for Liverpool Cathedral where a climb up the 350ft tower offers bird’s eye views as far as Blackpool.

And back on the ground, motor sports fans will want to make a date for the Red Bull Drift Shifters, roaring up The Strand on 19 August in a UK first.
