Charlie was nominated as a Community Hero by Rachel, who said…

“Charlie is the Musical Director of St Edmund’s Choir in Waterloo (SEMusic). This is a fantastic free choir with no auditions, and 60 members. Charlie is there week after week conducting with the same passion and love for music. During lockdown, Charlie broadcasted weekly on Facebook keeping members in touch and organised virtual performances which raised money for the NHS.

The impact? The local community is working together, is connected, and is able to access music which is free, fun and for everyone.”

Charlie, what inspires you to help others?

Music has always been one of my biggest passions – especially when making music with people.

The best thing for me about our rehearsal process is seeing a non-singer join us and their journey from someone who has never sang in harmony, has never read music before or never been in a choir grow into someone confident, enjoying singing and feeling part of a community.

When the pandemic hit, we had events planned and had to cancel them. I knew there were a group of people who were missing music making, and their motivation to do something inspired me to create a video series, music resources for children and virtual rehearsals and performances.

I might be the person nominated as a hero, but the Choir are all heroes for inspiring me to keep the music flowing.

What can people do to ‘light up Christmas’, and bring a smile to someone’s face this year?

We all need a bit of Christmas cheer to perk us up, so this year we’re streaming our Christmas concert for free for people to enjoy!

In September, we managed to battle through risk assessments and put mitigations in place to create a COVID-secure rehearsal space and come together to make music after six months of not being able to do so.  We weighed up our options and decided that we still wanted our Christmas events to go ahead, but this year we would do a virtual Christmas concert and pre-record the event.

The concert will be streamed Sunday 13 December at 7pm on Facebook and YouTube – see the trailer here

Thank you, Charlie!
