Environment

Liverpool ONE recognises its responsibilities to the environment we operate in and is, therefore, committed to the continual improvement of our environmental performance in relation to our services and operations.

Liverpool ONE is committed to reducing environmental impacts and to the continual improvement of our environmental performance. To help achieve this, we will continue to evolve our environmental Management System to comply with ISO 14001.

Waste and Recycling

Liverpool ONE recycles materials wherever possible. As well as providing a co-mingled recycling service for all of Liverpool ONE’s retail and leisure tenants we also recycle cardboard, glass, coffee graduals.

Liverpool ONE has become the first shopping and leisure destination to be able to run a full cleaning and mechanical elevation work platforms fleet on biodiesel produced from used cooking oil from several of our restaurants.

The used cooking oil is collected and converted into clean biodiesel by our in-house team. 100 litres of used cooking oil yields 100 litres of biodiesel and Liverpool ONE hopes to produce 200L of biodiesel a week. Approximately converting up to 1700L a month which in turn saves the company 54 tonnes of CO2 a year.

This initiative has benefited the retailers at Liverpool ONE by reducing their service charge as we will be able to pass the savings of over £10,000 a year in fuel costs back to our tenants. It also benefits the environment with the reduction of waste oil going to land fill sites and also reduces emissions to air.

The long term benefits are for both the environment and future cost savings. In partnership with retailers Liverpool ONE can reduce the amount of waste oil leaving the premises by 12,480 litres per annum.

Liverpool ONE has recently been presented with the National Gold Award at the Green Apple Awards, organised by The Green Organisation.

Energy

We endeavour where possible to reduce our usage of electricity. Energy management systems are used to monitor the site and patterns are used to identify where further decreases in energy usage can be achieved.

Where possible lighting has been replaced with LEDs and movement light sensors have been placed in some areas of Liverpool ONE.

Nature

Liverpool ONE includes the five acre Chavasse Park and there are 144 trees planted in the park and in Liverpool ONE’s streets and squares to help improve the local environment.

Nest boxes have been added to several trees in Chavasse Park to encourage bird life. And as modern lifestyles destroy trees, hedges and old buildings, natural nesting sites are in decline. Nest boxes placed in areas can make a real difference to the success or failure of a breeding species in a given area.
